How Long Can I Go Without Invisalign and They Still Work?

Since 1997, adults and teens have loved straightening their teeth with Invisalign. Before Invisalign, their only option was traditional metal braces, which weren’t very comfortable and often led to embarrassment in their personal and professional lives.

If you opt for Invisalign treatment, you can expect to receive a new set of clear aligners every two weeks. You’ll need to wear these aligners for at least 22 hours a day so that your teeth can gradually shift into their proper positions. Fortunately, you won’t have to be careful about what you eat or find caring for your teeth to be a hassle because Invisalign aligners are removable.

You are welcome to remove your aligners for brushing, flossing, eating, and drinking. While this is great news, it’s important to understand that if you keep your aligners out of your mouth for more than two hours each day, your Invisalign treatment won’t work as planned. Your treatment plan is based on your aligners staying in your mouth so that they can work their magic. If you take them out too much because you simply don’t feel like wearing them or have many meals throughout the day, you will prolong your treatment. The reality is that you can’t expect Invisalign aligners to leave you with a beautiful smile if you do not commit to wearing them for at least 22 hours a day.

If you’re worried that you’ll be tempted to take them out for more than two hours a day, traditional metal braces may be a better option.
