Swollen gums are very common. Believe it or not, they are often the result of metal braces. The good news, however, is that a few lifestyle habit changes and proper cleaning techniques can relieve the irritation that leads to swollen gums.
Why Do Swollen Gums Occur?
Traditional metal braces make brushing and flossing your teeth more difficult. Despite this, proper oral hygiene is essential as it can remove bacteria and reduce the risk of gum inflammation and gum disease. The first stage of these conditions is usually bleeding and swollen gums.
In addition to challenges with cleaning the teeth, swollen results may arise due to hyperplasia or hypertrophy, which are conditions in which the gums outgrow because they are too sensitive to the braces. Pressure from chewing hard foods such as raw veggies can bring even more pain to swollen gums.
Are Metal Braces Still a Good Option?
Here at Gladwell Orthodontics, we offer both traditional metal braces and Invisalign to our patients. While Invisalign is the preferred option for those with swollen gums, it’s not always the ideal treatment option.
If we believe metal braces are a wiser option, we’ll recommend them and work with the patient to ensure they understand how to maintain proper oral hygiene and reduce their risk of irritation. We’ll also educate them on which habits can worsen swollen gums so they can avoid them while undergoing orthodontic treatment.
