If I Don’t Clean My Invisalign Trays Will I Get a Cavity?

Invisalign treatment involves a series of clear, plastic aligners that are meant to gradually straighten or correct teeth. They’re removable, which is what makes them so appealing to patients and as a bonus, they’re great for patients of all ages. In fact, because they’re removable it makes it possible to properly care for the teeth much easier unlike traditional braces where the brackets and wires get in the way of cleaning, which can reduce the risk of a cavity. However, what some Invisalign patients may not know is that they should also be aware that they need to stick to a diligent cleaning routine of their Invisalign trays, as well.

Why do I need a cleaning routine for my Invisalign?

If you look at your aligners and notice they look “cloudy” or white, this would be a sign that it is time for them to be thoroughly cleaned! What you see on your aligners is the negative result of plaque buildup. If left alone, it could increase the chances for a cavity or increase the risk of other negative effects, which is best left avoided altogether.

How should Invisalign be cleaned?

It is extremely beneficial to your oral health to clean your Invisalign aligners daily. You can use the Invisalign Cleaning System; however, brushing your aligners with a toothbrush and toothpaste will also work. Do make sure that you aren’t using hot water, which could warp or damage the plastic of the Invisalign aligners.

What if I do get a cavity during my Invisalign treatment?

Cavities are fixed with “fillings” and depending on the severity of the cavity, it could be a simple fix. If you do get a cavity while undergoing Invisalign, you and the orthodontist will find a time to “restore” or repair the tooth. At this appointment, it would be important that you bring your Invisalign with you to make sure that it fits properly after the tooth is filled.
