Invisalign treatment has become a vastly popular treatment method amongst many orthodontic patients. As traditional metal braces become less desired, Invisalign aligners seem to become more and more ideal. Similar to metal braces, Invisalign aligners gradually straighten teeth in order to achieve the smile you have always wished for. However, what some may not know is that with Invisalign treatment certain individual cases may require small attachments or buttons to promote movement in the proper areas.
Attachments are small, tooth colored shapes made of composite that help provide an extra grip for the aligners, which help to apply force to specific teeth that may be more difficult to move. Buttons are small bracket like shapes that are applied directly to teeth that serve as an anchor so that the orthodontist can introduce rubber elastic bands to the treatment plan.
If you are a patient and have Invisalign buttons, it is important to be mindful when brushing and flossing, especially with a WaterPik. Although the buttons are firmly attached to teeth, it is possible for one to come off without careful maintenance. While we recognize that buttons may make at home hygiene more difficult, it is still just as important to continue to brush and floss regularly.
Should you ever have the experience of a button coming off, please call an Invisalign provider immediately so that a provider can evaluate your situation and propose a proper solution. Buttons coming off may negatively affect your next set of aligners causing shifting to occur if the aligners can no longer fit properly in the mouth without the buttons. We do not encourage you to come up with a “do it yourself” method to create new buttons or attempt to keep your aligners on with a thought up method.
