Invisalign Rubber Bands Causing Pain – Should I Worry?

Invisalign treatment is a series of clear aligners that fit tightly over a patient’s teeth. The aligners are traded out weeks at a time in order to effectively and gradually straighten teeth. Invisalign has transformed and is capable of treating many kinds of orthodontic cases in both teens and adults.

Patients who opt for Invisalign treatment as opposed to metal braces may think the two treatment options are different; however, they are very similar. Although Invisalign does not come with extra metal wires, some patients may need to have elastic rubber bands (nearly identical to the bands used with metal braces) as part of their treatment.

These elastic rubber bands are attached with “buttons,” small clear brackets that are placed on the teeth to be able to hold the bands in proper placement. Usually, the rubber bands will extend from an upper tooth and lower molar.

When first introducing rubber bands to treatment, it may be possible to experience some pain or discomfort. As the rubber bands help to increase the pressure for proper movement they can easily cause unwanted soreness. As your mouth and teeth get used to the rubber bands, the pressure or discomfort should subside. If you seem to have persistent pain or discomfort, it may be in your best interest to speak with your Invisalign provider to ensure the rubber bands are working appropriately.
